A new drug may make it harder for a patient to afford the expensive painkiller Celebrex, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced today.
The move comes just weeks after the FDA announced that the drug it is marketing for Celebrex, a Cox-2 inhibitor, will be available from January 1, 2004, the FDA said.
Celebrex is the second of the Cox-2 drugs approved for the treatment of arthritis, but the drug does not have the same kind of side effect risk as Celebrex, which has been used to treat the disease for more than a decade.
The FDA said it is concerned about the possible increased risk of stomach ulcers and kidney damage associated with Celebrex, but the drug has not been shown to be safe.
The agency said it was “reviewing the clinical trial data and evaluating the safety profile of the drug,” the FDA said in a statement. The statement said the results of the study suggest the drug will be more effective in reducing the risk of gastrointestinal problems in patients taking Cox-2 inhibitors than in patients taking an identical Cox-2 inhibitor.
“These findings are important to note given the increased risks for cardiovascular events in the elderly and those at higher risk of kidney problems in those taking the drug,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a statement.
The FDA said it is also concerned about the safety of Celebrex because the drug has not been studied in patients who already have heart disease and are at high risk of developing the condition.
“It’s important for patients to have a thorough evaluation by their doctor and be monitored closely,” the agency said.
“These results suggest that if Celebrex is taken for a long time, the risks for gastrointestinal complications may be more pronounced in those who already have cardiovascular disease,” it added.
Celebrex is also the drug for the treatment of pain and stiffness, although it has not been tested in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, the FDA said.
“We are confident that the benefits of Celebrex will outweigh any potential risks to patients,” said Dr. Robert H. Fuhrman, a professor of medicine and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.
“These results suggest that while there may be benefits in reducing cardiovascular risks, the benefits of Celebrex for patients with osteoarthritis may outweigh the risks in those at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” Fuhrman said in a statement.
The FDA’s comment came after the FDA had advised consumers not to take Celebrex as a heart condition, but it was not immediately clear whether the drug would be available for patients who are at high risk of developing the condition.
Fuhrman said the FDA has been “reviewing the study data and evaluating the safety profile of the drug” and that Celebrex is currently being studied for its possible potential drug to lower the risk of stomach ulcers and kidney damage.
“This is the first time the FDA has made a significant comment on Celebrex for patients who are at high risk of developing a gastrointestinal health problem,” Fuhrman said.
“We are confident that the benefits of Celebrex will outweigh the potential risks to patients.”
Dr. David Dolan, a urologist with the University of Chicago’s Medical Center, said the FDA is reviewing the safety profile of Celebrex for patients who are at high risk of developing the condition.
“I think the safety profile of Celebrex for patients who are at high risk of developing a serious condition is really important,” Dolan said. “If we can help with these safety issues, it could help patients with a serious condition and reduce the risk of serious adverse events.”
